Somewhere on a moon orbiting a world far from earth, dinosaurs live again. Long necked sauropods roam through orange fields edged by strnge purple trees. Ornithopods too run through the long alien grasses. In the skies a pterosaur glides over strange rock structures that jut up from the ground, and, in the sky, the horizon is dominated by the ringed planet around which this sci-fi nature preserve circles.

So, I haven’t played video games much in the past twenty years, but, as a software engineer and IT professional, I still get lots of articles about them in my news feeds. One that I’ve seen pop up a lot recently is science fiction game called “No Man’s Sky”. While I don’t know anything about how the game is played or its backstory, I was very impressed with it’s visuals: alien worlds with strange flora and fauna. So I was inspired by those visuals to create this scfi-fi/paleoart mashup. The dinosaurs, by the way, are giraffatitan and altirhinus. The pterosaur is an anhanguera.

Charging Mammoth

A raging mammoth charges at you. Crashing through the ice age snow, this Pleistocene beast raises its huge tusks as it lunges forward. If you were a prehistoric hunter, this would definitely be a bad day for you.

I’ve created a number of artworks featuring mammoths before, but for this one I really wanted to ratchet up the action and make this extinct animal really seem powerful and scary.

A Storm of Mammoths

Winter is around the corner, and I wanted to post some art to get me in the mood. This one, a bit of Mammoth Art, is from my paleoart series.  I have Mammoths heralding the coming of the cold season. The first dusting of snow has fallen and a rabbit has ventured out to see what all the commotion is about.

Most animals have a collective noun that names a group of them. For instance, a group of crows is called a murder, a group of chickens is called a brood, cats…a clowder, geese…a gaggle, etc.. However, there doesn’t appear to be a collective noun for mammoths. I guess being extinct deprives them of that. Well, I’ve decided that I like the word “storm” for a group of Mammoths, at least for this particular artwork.

This artwork was created digitally using 3D art applications as well as painting applications.
