Grizzly Bear in the Deep Woods

In this impressionist scene, a grizzly bear stands in the deep forest by a small waterfall in a little stream. Sunlight filters down through the leaves of the trees to illuminate the scene.

This was my first work using Canson Mi Tientes Pastel paper. I had aquired a 12″x16″ frame that I wanted to put this work in, but didn’t immediatly have the right sized paper on hand. I happened to be driving through Atlanta one weekend after dropping my son off at camp and decided to drop into Binder’s Art supply in buckhead. I hadn’t been there in 25 years. I’m not sure if it was always this way but the store is actually underground beneath a grocery store…rather neat. I was hoping they had my preferred medium, sanded paper, but they did not. They did, however, have the Mi Tientes paper. So I decided to give it a try. It was rather difficult to get details to work out well on this paper and it would not really take colored pencil at all. So this work is a bit more impressionistic than my usual fare.
